Strategic Discernment is a guided process for established (and new) churches. Before you plan anything, let's make sure it's the right thing.
THE PROBLEM
Most churches that feel stuck are not short on vision. They are short on honest information.
You have a picture of your congregation. Others have one that does not quite match. So you plan from your best guess, carry a few private doubts, and the next retreat produces a nice document describing a church that might not be the one you pastor on Sunday.
You feel it in the small moments. Something you believed in launches to polite nods and empty sign-up sheets. Someone says, "Our people would never go for that," everyone agrees, and nobody in the room actually knows.
None of that means something is wrong with your church. It means you are planning on top of guesses, and that is how a good church stays busy for years without ever quite going anywhere.

There are things your congregation will say to a guest that they will never say to their leadership. Not because they are dishonest, but because they love you, and because most people would rather protect a relationship than complicate it.
An outside facilitator changes what is sayable. I have spent over two decades working with churches and leaders across Canada, and the pattern holds nearly everywhere: the information a leadership team most needs is already in the building. A foundation you can plan on, built from what your people actually said rather than what anyone assumed. Most pastors tell us the report confirms two or three things they suspected, corrects one thing they were sure about, and surfaces something they never saw coming.

"We already know our problems."
Possibly. Phase One will confirm what you know, which has value of its own when you take it to a board. More often, it reorders your list, because the thing that generates the most conversation in leadership meetings is rarely the thing that generates the most concern in the pews.
"I am worried about what people will say."
That is a reasonable worry, and it is also the strongest argument for doing this. Whatever your people are thinking, they are already thinking it. The only question is whether it reaches you in a form you can work with, or whether you encounter it later in a more difficult setting.
"Our church is too small for a process like this."
Established churches of every size get stuck the same way. The process works; the value does not depend on your attendance.
